Fire burns about 100 acres near Mattawa
MATTAWA — A wildland fire scorched about 100 acres about two miles west of Mattawa on Tuesday afternoon. Grant County Fire District 8 Chief Matt Hyndman said the fire was reported at about 4:45 p.m.
Hyndman said a survey crew was staking lots on unimproved ground and drove their truck through the grass. In dry conditions, driving on unimproved land is not a good practice – in this case, the truck caught fire and the fire spread from there.
“You shouldn’t be driving out in tall grass, for sure,” Hyndman said.
Crews from GCFD 8 and Royal Slope Fire responded, he said, including six trucks from GCFD and four from GCFD 10. Crews knocked down the flames and began mopping up by about 6:15 p.m.
