Soap Lake to celebrate Suds ‘N Sun on Saturday

SOAP LAKE — Suds ‘N Sun, Soap Lake’s big summer celebration, will be Saturday, according to an announcement from the Soap Lake Chamber of Commerce.

The fun will start at 9 a.m. with the Soap Box Derby, where children race motorless cars down the hill on East Main Avenue. There’s no age limit as such; children are weighed and then the car is weighted to bring the total to 160 pounds, so bigger kids don’t have an advantage with gravity.

Also starting at 9 a.m. is the 3-on-3 basketball tournament on the basketball courts at Smokiam Park, sponsored by the Soap Lake Prevention Council. Teams can pre-register or sign up the day of the tournament.

At 10 a.m., First Avenue Northeast will be lined with classic vehicles — cars, bikes, motorcycles, anything that rolls — for the classic car show. The entry fee is $20; there’s no charge just to come and look at the cars. There will be trophies and raffles along with the show, including a People’s Choice award that spectators vote on.

At 4:30, the Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt Show will rumble down Main Avenue. The Cossacks have been regular performers at Suds ‘N Sun, as well as other local festivals. Past shows have included things like one rider handling two bikes simultaneously, human pyramids and occasionally a biker jumping over a volunteer from the audience.

After the Cossacks have finished, the street will be turned over to the Grand Parade, which will make its way down Main Avenue starting at 6:30 with floats, music and community spirit, according to the chamber.

The day ends at dusk with a fireworks display.

Throughout the day, there will be food trucks, artisan and craft booths and games for the children.

“(Suds ‘N Sun is) an all-day extravaganza of fun, food and fireworks the whole family will love,” the Chamber wrote.
