Basin events for Feb. 2025
COLUMBIA BASIN — Crafts, music and a whole lot of Valentine’s Day events are in store this month in the Basin. Here are a few things to check out:
Jan. 31
Pottery Club
Are you interested in trying pottery? This casual pottery program is your chance to get your hands dirty and give it a go. This class is geared towards self-starters and the museum will provide you with a small amount of clay, tools and glaze. Three pottery wheels are also available for more experienced potters. Each session includes a bisque fire and a glaze fire. Glaze days are two weeks after each session or by appointment. 1-3 p.m. at the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Steven Dunlap

Free Family Saturday

Waypoint Foundation Scholastic Chess Tournament
Open to all K-12 students including homeschoolers in Grant and Adams counties. Pizza lunch is provided free for players and cash prizes will be awarded. No charge. Country Sweethearts Auction

Walk for Life

After Life Arrangements Class

Featured Artist Watercolor Class
This is an opportunity to learn from featured artist Emma Buchanan. She is a local muralist and has a passion for sharing with others. Class will cover watercolor basics, color building and a bit of drawing and perspective. Spots are limited, so reserve early. Class is for ages 10 and up. $40 per person for four weeks. FAFSA assistance
Getting started with federal student aid can be tricky. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid form is used to apply for financial aid for college and graduate school. Like a lot of federal forms, it’s a bit of a lift, but it unlocks opportunities for student loans, scholarships, grants, work-study programs and more. Spokane Teachers Credit Union is partnering with Launch NW and the College Success Foundation to provide qualified help completing the FAFSA. It’s free for any community member with a student considering higher education. STCU membership is not required to attend. No registration necessary. Participants should bring 2023 federal tax return, bank account balances and other financial information. A laptop with Wi-Fi capability is helpful but not necessary. Singo
Singo is a new and exciting musical spin on the traditional game of Bingo. Instead of listening for a number, players are listening to their favorite music. Each player receives a free Singo card printed with the titles of popular songs. While Singo randomly plays song clips, players can sing along and mark matching song titles on their cards. The first player to mark five songs in a row and to shout "Singo" wins the round. Admission is free and prizes will be awarded. 6 p.m. at the Moses Lake Taproom, 530 W. Valley Road. Collections Circle
Help the Quincy Valley Historical Society bring order out of the chaos of the many items the museum is cataloging for its climate-controlled archive. Movie Day at the Library
North Central Washington Libraries presents “Wicked,” a fantasy/musical movie, free for all ages. Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths. Movie is rated PG and runs 2 hours and 40 minutes. Clue: On Stage
Based on the iconic 1985 movie which was inspired by the classic board game, Clue is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth the butler, Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard race to find the killer as the body count stacks up. Concealed Carry Class
This four-hour comprehensive training course is designed to educate individuals on the laws and regulations surrounding the carrying of concealed firearms. This class covers essential topics such as the use of force, firearms safety and the proper handling and storage of firearms, as well as the specific laws and any requirements for obtaining permits in Washington, Oregon and Arizona. Upon completion of the class, attendees will be eligible to apply for the above-mentioned permits and will also receive a WA — HB-1143 Gun Safety Certificate. Cost is $74.99. Open Studio
Bring your current or planned project and make a mess in the museum instead of at home. Join other artists to socialize and get inspiration. Need a prompt to get started? A museum instructor will be on hand and can help with that. Easels, brushes, rulers, and any other re-useable supplies will be provided, as well as a small amount of craft paints, drawing pencils and other supplies for use. Sketching, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, acrylic, oil, whatever your medium is. All levels of experience are welcome. Ages 16 and up. Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour
The 2024 Short Film Tour was curated from the 2024 festival, including three award-winning titles. The short films are a testament to the unique storytelling potential that the format holds. Audiences can enjoy a mix of fiction, documentary, and animated shorts that are funny, sad, inspiring, and full of strong characters. Driven by innovation and experimentation, the Short Film Program seeks out filmmaking’s most original voices from around the world. For mature audiences only; films include themes of sex, sexuality, gender and violence. Concessions will be available before the films.
