LETTER: In support of telehealth
I am writing to express my support for the Social Work Licensure Compact, as I believe it is important for our area, and it allows licensed social workers to provide telehealth services across state lines. This initiative addresses the need for continuity of care, especially in underserved areas like Grant County, Wash.
Since joining the Compact, Wash., has seen benefits. Grant County lacks mental health providers, and the Compact enables residents to access specialized care previously unavailable. This comes as our area faces rising drug use, homelessness, and a growing mental health crisis. The Compact allows residents to engage with therapists specializing in substance abuse, trauma and other issues while continuing care with trusted providers even if clients move.
Mistrust of telehealth has hindered the Compact’s full impact, as some fear it is less personal than in-person therapy. However, studies show telehealth produces comparable outcomes while removing barriers like transportation and mobility. For communities like ours, it is essential, not just convenient. While critics cite concerns about differing state laws, the Compact ensures social workers follow the client’s state regulations, maintaining ethical and legal standards.
The Social Work Licensure Compact is critical to addressing the mental health, substance use and homelessness crisis in Grant County. Expanding telehealth will support our most vulnerable residents and benefit rural areas and other states that join the Compact.
