Harold Dean Mathenia
Harold Dean Mathenia, 86, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 86 surrounded by his family. Born on Oct. 28, 1938. Dean was a man of unwavering strength, kindness and dedication who touched the lives of everyone he met.
Dean grew up the youngest of three brothers and one sister, instilling in him a strong sense of family and camaraderie from an early age. Dean proudly served his country joining the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Moses Lake where he met the love of his life, Frances. Dean knew that Frances was the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life. Dean and Fran lived in Seattle where he worked at Todd Shipyards before returning to Moses Lake. He then found a fulfilling job as an electrician at U & I Sugar. Dean was affectionately known as "Big Hair."
Dean and Frances created a nurturing home on a small farm, where they instilled values of accountability, compassion and hard work in their children. Their small farm became a sanctuary not only for their immediate family but also for two generations of grandchildren. Dean was a devoted caregiver, taking on the roles of babysitter and bus driver for his grandchildren and he was cherished by all as the best grandfather ever.
He was a steadfast presence in the lives of his family. Dean's love and support knew no bounds. As the family grew, he built a new home on a hill, ensuring that his legacy of love and nurturing continued for future generations. Dean was not just a family man: He was a loyal friend to many and cherished his friendships. He was an active member of the mounted sheriff posse, Sand Commandos jeep club, 4-H leader and little league coach. He found joy in camping and fishing, often embarking on adventures with his family.
As Dean entered his mid-70s, he decided to retire from traveling, but his zest for life and commitment to his family never waned. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and cherished memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those he touched.
Harold Dean Mathenia is survived by his beloved wife, Frances, and his children, Dena, Lisa (Cliff), David (Chelsey) and Danielle (James); his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends who will miss him dearly.
A celebration of Dean's life will be held at a date to be announced, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man he was.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local charity of your choice in Dean's memory. He would have loved to know that his legacy of compassion and kindness continues to shine through the lives of others.
Rest in Peace, Dean. You will forever be in our hearts.
