Lady Vikings extend win streak to 10 with gritty win over Spokane Falls
MOSES LAKE - Looking to make it 10 wins in a row, Big Bend Community College hosted the Spokane Falls Sasquatch on Wednesday at the DeVries Activity Center. The Lady Vikes came out swinging in the first quarter, establishing an early lead by knocking down 41% of their shots and playing elite defense. They held Spokane to just 20% from the floor and finished the opening 10 minutes with a commanding 16-8 lead.
The second quarter, however, told a different story. Spokane Falls flipped the script, shooting a blistering 60% from the field while holding Big Bend to just 29%. With each team dominating a quarter, Spokane went into the halftime break with a 31-26 advantage.
After regrouping during the intermission, the Lady Vikes returned to the floor with renewed energy. They put on an offensive clinic in the third quarter, shooting an incredible 85%, connecting on 11 of their 13 attempts, and tying the game at 50 each heading into the final quarter.
BBCC continued their disciplined play in the fourth quarter, shooting 50% from the field while stifling the Sasquatch offense, holding them to just 33%. The Lady Vikes pulled away late to secure a hard-fought 69-65 victory, extending their winning streak to 10 games.
Oaklie Jackman led the charge for the Vikings, tallying 15 points and eight rebounds. Riley Layton was right behind her with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Katie Hansen contributed 13 points, including three clutch three-pointers.
Head Coach Preston had this to say regarding the impressive victory:
"We wanted to have a strong start to the game which we did and when the 1st quarter ended, momentum was with us. But then we were held scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the 2nd quarter and the momentum definitely flipped to Spokane. But we regrouped at the half, came out and had a strong 3rd quarter and then milked that lead to the end. This game was similar to our past 2 wins, we seem to be liking these close finishes. I'm proud of the ladies and how resilient they are when we get to the final 2 minutes of these games. Tonight, we had 2 of our captains step up and each knock down their two free throw attempts, going a combined 4 for 4 over the final 20 seconds of the game. Spokane has played us tough this year, as each game against them literally came down to the final few seconds of the game. The ladies are excited about Saturday's matchup at home against Walla Walla. Should be a great game to watch," he said.
