QUINCY – Girls wrestling teams from the Columbia Basin and beyond gathered in Quincy for the Bring Home da Beef tournament on Saturday, with five local teams closing out the final Saturday of the regular season with top 10 finishes at the 30-plus team tournament.

Richland won the tournament with 201.5 points, with Othello (170.5 points), Moses Lake (134.5), Royal (130) and Quincy (103) rounding out the top five. Ephrata took 10th place with 76 points.

“It was a good last tournament before the district tournament in a couple weeks,” Quincy head coach Mark Kondo said.

Six Jackrabbits placed at their home tournament, including sophomore Crystal Perez (110 pounds), senior Alondra Cordova (125) and freshman Hailey Courtade (130), who all reached the finals and finished in second place. Sophomore Emiko Kondo (100 pounds, sixth place), junior Jourdan Ferguson (135, fifth) and junior Diana Trujillo (170, sixth) also placed in the tournament.

“We had three girls that made the finals, which helped us, and the other girls that were in the consolation came through and scored points for us,” Kondo said. “That’s been true for the whole year; we’ve usually had a couple girls make the finals, but those girls that have come through the consolation really make a difference.”

The Jackrabbits took fifth place in the tournament all while missing five starters from their lineup; Kondo said had this been a postseason tournament the injured wrestlers most likely would have competed but were held out on Saturday as a precaution. Emiko Kondo, Ferguson and Trujillo battling through the consolation rounds were key in securing the top-five finish, Mark Kondo said.

“I think being able to refocus mentally and come back and learn from the previous match and be able to make adjustments to come back and grind through it,” he said of how the Jacks battled through the consolation rounds. “A lot of times in the consolations, wrestlers get knocked down and it’s real tough to refocus ... one thing we’ve preached all year is it’s about getting better and improving each match each day.”

Running the scoring tables at the tournament were wrestlers from the Big Bend Community College women’s wrestling team.

“It was really nice to have them there, just to have the college girls present at the tournament so the high school girls can see them or meet them and talk with them, hopefully, to promote wrestling,” Kondo said.

Quincy closes the regular season with a road dual against Ephrata on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Jacks are 5-2 in league duals, currently third in the league standings behind Toppenish and Othello.

“Just to be able to wrestle duals has helped us,” Kondo said. “We’re excited to compete against Ephrata, being neighbors, and see that as another match to help get ready for districts.”

The Central Washington Athletic Conference district tournament will be held on Feb. 14 and 15 at Toppenish High School. The top five wrestlers in each class advance to the 2A Girls Mat Classic in Tacoma later this month.
