Rock Bottom Rocker Pet Pantry launches Angel Tree program for rescue pets

SOAP LAKE — As the holiday spirit fills the air, Rock Bottom Rocker Pet Pantry animal rescue is ready to spread some cheer to furry friends waiting for their forever homes. This year, the organization announced the launch of a pilot program inspired by traditional angel giving tree initiatives. However, this project takes a twist: it centers on the animals at the rescue. 

The new initiative, set to kick off Dec. 12, allows community members to fulfill holiday wishes for the pets at the pantry. Inspired by the joy of giving and community spirit, the program features a decorated tree adorned with angel tags, each representing a specific need or want for the animals housed at the rescue. Each person who participates in getting the pets holiday gifts, will also get a specialty Christmas ornament they get to keep.  

Shawna Kluge, President of Rock Bottom Rocker Pet Pantry, shared her enthusiasm for this endeavor.  

“I’ve been thinking about this idea for years. This year, seeing a social media post about a similar program reignited my passion,” Kluge said. “I reached out to the manager at Akins Fresh Market, Tracy Snitily, who was incredibly supportive of the initiative. We agreed this was the perfect opportunity to uplift our community while also providing for our animals.” 

The angel tree will be set up at Akins Fresh Market, with tags detailing the wishes of various animals residing at the pet pantry. Each tag includes the name of the animal, its description and specific items they desire, such as toys, treats, or even necessary supplies. Community members can select tags, purchase appropriate gifts and return them to the store by Dec. 23 —ensuring all donations make it in time for Christmas. 

This year’s program comes at a crucial moment, Kluge said. She and her primary volunteer, Tina Funk, have traditionally financed special holiday enrichment events for the pets out of their own pockets. The two have purchased special gifts for the animals during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. However, the economic climate has made this increasingly difficult, she said. 

“Every year, we do our best to provide holiday enrichment. Yet this year, we felt the financial strain even more,” Kluge said. “This program alleviates some of the financial pressure we face while ensuring that the animals receive the joy and care they deserve during the holidays.” 

The angel tree tags vary depending on the species of the animal. Dogs might ask for raised dog beds and durable toys, while cats may wish for treats or interactive games. There is also a horse, bunnies and other animals seeking gifts this season. Community involvement is not just about gift-giving, Kluge said; it’s an opportunity to engage the public in a meaningful way without the pressure of long-term commitment.  

“This initiative is a wonderful way for the community to connect with our mission while lending a helping hand to the animals,” Kluge said. “People can feel good about contributing without the obligation of adopting a pet.” 

With the success of this pilot program in mind, Kluge hopes to continue the initiative annually.  

“This is just the beginning — an opportunity to foster a culture of giving and community involvement. We believe in creating a brighter, warmer holiday season for all the animals in our care and the families that love them,” she said.
