Grant County announces snow removal and sanding guidelines

MOSES LAKE – Grant County Public Works has announced its snow plowing and sanding protocols in preparation for the winter season through a statement from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.  

These guidelines emphasize the importance of safety and efficiency, particularly for major roads and emergency routes, as crews are set to respond to adverse weather conditions, according to GCSO’s statement.  

Under the rules, plowing operations will commence when snow accumulation reaches three inches or when there is at least one-eighth of an inch of freezing rain.  

During standard working hours, the primary focus will be on major arterial roads and emergency school bus routes, classified as Priority 1.  

Following these, Priority 2 roads, which include minor arterials with steep grades along with high-volume local access roads, will be addressed.  

Priority 3 encompasses lower-volume minor collectors and local access roads, while unsurfaced gravel roads will be handled last due to their lower daily traffic volumes. 

Sanding efforts will be limited primarily to intersections, bridges, steep hills and sharp curves—areas identified as critical for safe passage during winter weather. Sanding operations are scheduled to begin between 5:00 and 6:00 AM, with an earlier start during particularly hazardous conditions such as black ice. 

To facilitate efficient snow removal, residents are reminded to refrain from parking vehicles in the county right-of-way. Any vehicles left on the street may be plowed in or, if they pose a traffic hazard, towed at the owner's expense. Additionally, residents are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their properties. 

Private roads and driveways will not receive plowing services from county equipment, except in cases of emergencies that jeopardize life or property. This focused approach is designed to ensure that high-traffic areas remain accessible and safe for all residents, according to a statement from GCSO.  

In extreme weather conditions, such as blizzards or high winds, plowing operations will be delayed until visibility and safety improve. The county remains committed to responding appropriately to weather challenges while prioritizing road safety for all community members.
