Mariners suffer two away losses against Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Mariners have had two losses Monday and Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, with a five-run loss Monday and being beaten by two Tuesday afternoon.
Monday’s game
Trea Turner had four hits, including his first home run at home this season, Bryce Harper homered twice and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 12-7 on Monday night.
Turner hit a three-run homer off Seattle starter Logan Gilbert (3-5) as part of a six-run second inning. Turner also had two singles and a double for his fifth straight multihit game. He finished with five RBIs.
Harper hit homers in back-to-back innings. His solo shot in the sixth marked the 11th time he's had 20 home runs in a season. An inning later, his two-run homer off the second deck made it his 30th multihomer game.
J.T. Realmuto had three hits, including a home run, and the Phillies also got RBI hits from Kyle Schwarber, Max Kepler and Bryson Stott. All told, the Phillies got 21 hits.
Ranger Suárez (9-6) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Mitch Garver and Cole Young provided most of the offense for Seattle. They each homered while Garver added an RBI single. Young finished with four RBIs.
Gilbert lasted just two innings and gave up six runs and nine hits. The Mariners have lost three straight and five of six.
One home run away from tying the major league record for home runs in a season by a catcher, Seattle's Cal Raleigh went 0-for-5, striking out three times.
After the Mariners had a four-run seventh to get within three, the Phillies answered with four runs Monday, capped by Harper’s second home run.
Turner’s homer was the 1,500th hit of his career.
Tuesday’s game
J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Realmuto’s homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher’s interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher’s interference call.
Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs.
Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies since Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save and sixth with Philly since being acquired at the trade deadline.
Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which has lost four straight and six of seven.
Bryce Miller was activated from the injured list before the game and made his first start since May 12 for the Mariners. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings.
MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh went 1 for 3 with a double and two walks for Seattle. Raleigh, with 47 homers, is one shy of matching the MLB record for home runs in a season by a catcher.
Realmuto’s homer put the Phillies ahead for good, leading to their third straight win.
Philadelphia's Cristopher Sanchez matched his career high with 12 strikeouts, allowing two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Tomorrow, Mariners RHP Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.48 ERA) starts against Phillies LHP Jesus Luzardo (11-6, 4.21).
