Moses Lake middle schools looking for coaches

MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake School District announced they are looking for coaches at Frontier and Endeavor Middle School. Loren Sandhop, the athletic director for the school district, said the most important aspect of a candidate they are looking for is good people.  

“We're teaching them lifelong lessons, and we're just using sport to do it,” Sandhop said.  

The announcement said they are looking for coaches who are passionate about mentoring today’s youth and having a great time doing it.  

“We're giving the kids another avenue to connect to school, to realize they have to be good citizens, to realize that discipline, time management and work ethic are really valued,” Sandhop said.  

Frontier is looking for a girls soccer coach, which is shared with Endeavor. Endeavor is looking for coaches in volleyball, cross country and cheer. Sandhop said any candidate interested in a particular role should have some experience with the sport they want to coach. To him, coaches will draw on their own experiences to coach the players.  

Sandhop said that anyone interested in applying for a coaching role with the middle schools should consider the time commitment.  

“We have to have people that have flexibility in their day and can meet the needs of our kids,” he said.  

According to him, candidates should be prepared to take on the additional responsibilities of a coaching role. In addition to a flexible schedule, making sure transportation is organized, keeping track of equipment and uniform inventory. Lastly, having availability for practice and games that usually take place during the week.  

Bob Richardson, pitching coach for the Mavericks softball team, also coaches and runs the Washington Rage summer softball team. When he decided to join the coaching staff, he saw an opportunity to help his community build a competitive program, he said. In his time coaching at the high school level, he has also found it to be rewarding to give student athletes opportunities to build character and learn life lessons through a sport. 

“It's extremely important to build kids with good character,” he said. “That has been kind of the hallmark of my coaching career all my years. Being able to help out with a different group of kids and a larger group of kids is rewarding in the fact that you see the successes and the growth in those kids.”
