Mavs softball falls to Mount Si

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks softball team fell to Mount Si 0-11 on Tuesday afternoon. 

“They’re a really good team and we didn’t play our sharpest ball,” said Mavs head coach Mike Hofheins. “We were kind of off defensively, we were off offensively, our pitching wasn’t as sharp as it normally is, and it was kind of a bad combination against a good team.” 

Hayden Morris, Jenika Balderas, Lila Johnson and Caitlin Decubber each collected a hit for the Mavs and Paige Richardson pitched four and two-thirds innings, where she struck out nine and walked one. The team is treating their loss as a learning experience as they push forward with their season, said the coach. 

“We have got to embrace it, and we have to just want to get better,” he said. “League title is still out in front of us. A trip to state is still out in front of us, so if that’s our worst game of the season and we go up from here, I think we’re going to be a tough team to deal with in the future.” 

Hofheins said the team is looking to be crisper in how they play and is focusing on being more mentally present. They might have competed, but the team didn’t play the way that they are known for, he said. 

“We need to focus on showing up and not taking any days off,” said the coach. “Then everything matters, every practice rep matters, every game rep matters, so we just need to be in that mindset every day and grind.” 

The Mavs look towards a home doubleheader against Davis tomorrow with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. 

    Paige Richardson started on the mound for the Mavs where she struck out nine over almost all five innings.
