Mavs shut out Cheney on Monday
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks softball team earned a 10-0 victory over Cheney on Monday afternoon.
“I thought we started a little flat, but we picked it up as we went inning by inning and just came together and got the win,” said Mavs’ Hayden Morris after the game.
The Mavs put themselves on the board in the bottom of the first inning with Paige Richardson, Mya Martinez and Caitlin Decubber each scoring a run, then Hayden Morris and Jenika Balderas both scored runs in the second inning with Balderas scoring again in the third. The Mavs then put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth, which sealed their 10-0 victory.
“I think defensively we stay clean and crisp and back up our pitchers,” said Decubber.
Mavs head coach Mike Hofheins said they played well defensively, with the pitchers putting up a great performance. Richardson was first to pitch, giving up zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out six and walking one. Decubber came in after pitching two innings of no-run ball for the Mavs, giving up one hit, striking out two and walking none.
“Even if your hitting is not dialed in, you can be successful if you play good defense,” said Hofheins.
Results from the Mavs' Tuesday game against Mount Si will be published Thursday.
