Soap Lake City Council still seeking to fill two seats

SOAP LAKE – The Soap Lake City Council is actively seeking candidates to fill two open council positions.  

"Participating in city council is not just about being in the government; it's about community representation," Council Member Judith Gorman said, noting that she spoke on her own behalf and not the entire council. "The city council plays a crucial role in shaping policies that affect every resident in Soap Lake.” 

The application process will focus on identifying individuals who possess a genuine interest in Soap Lake and demonstrate a commitment to understanding the city's needs.  

According to Gorman, residents have a unique perspective that can benefit the city council's decision-making process.  

"The council is looking for candidates who have been engaged with the community and understand our challenges and priorities. It’s important that council members listen to and advocate for our residents' needs," Gorman said.  

The city council is responsible for setting policies that guide the administration of Soap Lake, with the two vacant positions providing an opportunity for new voices to enter local governance.  

Council members are charged with various responsibilities, including adopting the annual city budget, establishing sewer and water rates and setting tax levies. These roles require individuals who can navigate complex legislative processes while remaining attuned to the needs of citizens. 

Gorman said the role can be time-consuming. She said she often spends 20 or more hours on council work every week. She also recommends that someone with a good temper joins.  

“You need to be calm,” she said.” Sometimes there will be things people will say that may trigger me emotionally, and my job as a council member is to keep thinking and not respond emotionally, but instead with the factual data that supports my perspective as well as my vote.” 

Individuals interested in applying for the city council positions are encouraged to attend upcoming council meetings to gain insight into current issues and the legislative process. Gorman reflected on her own journey to the council, noting that her initial involvement in local governance stemmed from her active attendance at council meetings long before she was elected.  

"I strongly believe that being an active participant in local meetings on the various committees is essential for understanding the intricacies of the city government," she said. "I hope to see a group of applicants — people who are willing to put in the time and effort to make a difference." 

To facilitate the selection process, applications will be presented at the next city council meeting April 16 and the following meeting April 29, where the council will cast votes on potential candidates.  

The first of the two seats needs to be filled by May 5, according to Mayor Peter Sharp at the April 2 council meeting. He said there has been one applicant, but the person is still on the fence about joining the council.  

The council’s structure is designed to encourage participation from various sectors of the community. Gorman expressed hope for a broad representation of interests. 

“I’d love to see people from different backgrounds and with a variety of experiences, which is important for a good council,” she said.  

Aspiring council members are invited to submit their applications promptly. As a small community, Soap Lake thrives on active participation, Gorman said, and the city leadership is hopeful that the two new council members will bring fresh ideas, energy, and a commitment to serving the residents.
