Mavs softball team dominates in doubleheader vs. Cadets

MOSES LAKE – On Friday, the Moses Lake Mavericks (6-2) softball team dominated at home against the visiting Eisenhower Cadets (2-4), winning the doubleheader 20-0 and 14-1.  

Heading into this matchup, head coach Mike Hofheins emphasized remaining focused and not letting their guards down.  

“I was super proud of the way we just kept our focus and kept playing hard and playing clean throughout the entire evening,” he said.  

Momentum was captured early and never relinquished by the Mavs, scoring several times in the first innings of both games. Strong pitching by Paige Richardson, in addition to strong contributions by Samantha Kling and Amelia Avalos, fed into the team chemistry. 

“I mean, good defense is contagious, and hitting is contagious, too. I like how our team is feeding off of each other, and I like how our team is contributing,” said Hofheins.  

The Mavericks were dealing with some injuries and absences on their roster heading into the doubleheader, so a few of the younger players were called upon. Hofheins felt confident that they were ready to step up in the absence of more experienced players.  

“We feel good about some of our kids that aren't all full-time starters being able to contribute and that was nice to see yesterday. Yeah, we just think it doesn't really matter who contributes, just that we get the job done. So, [Friday] was a good example of that,” he said.  

The Mavericks showed themselves to be a powerful team with a lot of depth Friday. As they look ahead, they’re eager to play the Jackson Timberwolves, knowing their history of success. Hofheins believes it will provide them with a good challenge going up against former state champions.  

The Mavericks host the Timberwolves at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
