Gridiron Roundup: Local squads tackle Week 2
MOSES LAKE — Several Columbia Basin football teams have started the 2024 season strong with winning records. While a few have suffered losses, the season is far from over. Here's a snapshot of games and records established in week two:
ACH (2-0)
The Warriors put nearly 500 yards of offense in Saturday’s win over Garfield-Palouse, forcing three Viking turnovers in a 54-28 win.
Junior Caden Correia led the team in both passing and rushing, completing 10-of-15 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns while adding an additional 109 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Senior Carter Pitts and junior Harvest Parrish both ran for touchdowns, while senior Jameson Conley, Pitts, senior Denim Kenney and junior Brady Roberts all caught touchdown passes.
LRS (2-0)
Senior Brody Boness scored four total touchdowns in Friday night’s 39-16 road win over Manson, rushing for 200 yards and two scores on 20 carries, catching two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown while also returning a kickoff for a touchdown in the win.
Rounding out the scoring was senior Carson Kubik catching a three-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and sophomore Cole Rouleau running to the endzone on a 15-yard carry in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos also recovered two Manson fumbles in the win.
Moses Lake (1-1)
The Mavericks earned their first win of the 2024 season with a 30-23 home victory over North Creek on Friday, maintaining the lead for the entirety of the game following a 14-yard touchdown catch by senior Isiah Moreno-Jackson in the second quarter, his first of two touchdowns Friday night.
Junior Brady Jay completed 23-of-37 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns Friday, adding an additional 67 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Sophomore Elijah Burns led Moses Lake with eight catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.
MLCA/CCS (0-2)
The Lions dropped to 0-2 with Saturday’s 72-12 loss to DeSales; junior Johnny Ferguson completed seven-of-17 passes for 97 yards, while senior Levi North ran the ball 10 times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Ferguson added an additional 72 yards and a touchdown on eight carries in the loss. Sophomore Treyson Kast caught five passes for 95 yards.
Othello (2-0) - Statistics not available
The Huskies won their lone non-league game of the season Thursday, defeating rival Connell 42-17 at home Thursday. Othello hosts Grandview on Friday at 7 p.m.
Quincy (0-2)
The Jacks were shut out of Friday’s Battle of the Basin on the road against Ephrata, falling 33-0 to the Tigers. Junior Pierce Bierlink completed 15-of-28 passes for 133 yards in the loss, while senior Jaxon Ferguson ran the ball 16 times for 89 yards. Junior Jace Reyes caught six passes for 49 yards.
Royal (2-0)
Royal senior Santana Lune accounted for five touchdowns in Friday’s 69-7 win over College Place, returning two punts for touchdowns from 77 and 90 yards out, catching a 50-yard pass for a score, running a 15-yard carry for a score and returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.
Royal scored 49 points in the first quarter; senior Lance Allred completed all five of his pass attempts for 170 yards and five touchdowns, while senior Jackson Larsen led the Knights with 60 receiving yards, all of which came on a touchdown catch in the first quarter. The Knights held the Eagles to just 67 total yards Friday.
Soap Lake (2-0)
Senior Jairo Lopez completed eight-of-13 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns in Friday’s 36-22 win over Waterville-Mansfield, adding an additional 51 rushing yards on seven carries.
Lopez’s three touchdown passes went to senior Ruvim Goloborodko (two receptions for 38 yards), junior Logan Northup (one catch for 60 yards) and senior Kyle Ayers (one catch for 25 yards. Sophomore Terrance Panduro totaled 66 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while senior Samuel Schopf rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
Wahluke (2-0)
The Warriors continued their winning ways Thursday with a 31-6 home win over Wapato, a game where three Wahluke players ran for touchdowns.
Sophomore Franco Perez led the Warriors with 121 yards and a score on 14 carries, as juniors Christian Anaya and Keaton Zirker also ran for touchdowns in the win. Wahluke’s other touchdown came from senior Luis Corona, who scored on a 40-yard blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Corona also connected on a 27-yard field goal.
Warden (2-0)
The Cougar offense scored five touchdowns and compiled 352 yards of total offense in Saturday’s non-league 33-14 win over Mossyrock, as senior Michael Gonzalez (twice), sophomore Kam Jensen, junior Honter Golladay and junior Rhett Jorgensen all found the end zone in the win.
Warden threw the ball for 233 yards and combined for 119 rushing yards in the win.
