GCAO to host $25 microchipping events

MOSES LAKE — Grant County Animal Outreach is holding six microchipping events in October and November for $25 per animal. Normally microchips cost $55 a pet but Serena Jewell, assistant manager at Grant County Animal Outreach said they are trying to make it more affordable for pet owners.  

“We're looking for everyone that is wanting a microchip, whether they're just fostering an animal or animal that they've been wanting to get microchipped,” Jewell said. “But we know it can be pretty expensive cost-wise; we're just helping anyone and everyone. So, it's not only open to Grant County, it's open to any surrounding counties that are willing to make the trip over. It is going to be held at our shelter, but there are no qualifications, whether that be income or anything like that. We're just open and trying to help everyone.” 

The dates are Oct. 10, 17 and 24 and Nov. 7, 17 and 21 from noon until 5 p.m. The events will be held at the shelter at 6725 Randolph Road, Moses Lake. Both dogs and cats are welcome to the event.  

GCAO asks that animal owners enter the building without their animals and complete paperwork and payment; then the staff will help coordinate bringing the animal in.  

“It's just because not everybody's dog is going to get along with the high-stress environment, whether that be the other people or other people's dogs,” Jewell said. “On the last couple of times they've done these events, sometimes when a litter of puppies that are loud and rowdy gets brought in and we're trying to microchip a cat, it can pose a lot of safety concerns. So, it also goes a lot smoother if people let their pets wait in the car.” 

At the last microchipping event they held around 70 animals received a chip, Jewell said.
