2024 WA fire season coming to a close
The Swawilla I fire spread through the canyon July 28. The fire was the largest in Washington this season, scorching around 53,500 acres, according to InciWeb. The fire started July 17 by lightning and was contained by August 22. The fire was located north of the Columbia River and east of the Swawilla Basin, west of Highway 21.

The head of the Retreat Fire looking east on July 27. The Retreat Fire was the second largest in Washington this season burning around 45,600 acres, according to InciWeb. The fire started July 23 by an undetermined cause. The fire was loaded 14 miles southeast of Naches. The fire switched to local agency management on Aug. 19 and no further updates have been given to Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Communications Manager, Ryan Rodruck therefore he has stated its a “dead fire.”

The fire started June 8 from an undetermined cause and has an estimated containment date of Oct. 31. However, according to Wildfire Communications Manager, Ryan Rodruck there have been no updates on growth and the fire will continue to burn until precipitation and colder weather arrives. The fire is no longer tracked by DNR.

The Cougar Creek Fire charred almost 23,100 acres and was the fourth largest wildfire in Washington this year. The fire started July 15 from an undetermined cause and was contained on Oct. 1, according to InciWeb.
Smoke from the Williams Mine Fire hides portions of Mount Adams Aug. 11. The fire singed around 13,100 acres of land and was the fifth largest blaze in Washington in 2024. The fire began Aug. 5 from lighting and is expected to be contained by Oct. 31. However, Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Communications Manager, Ryan Rodruck said the wildfire is no longer active.
MOSES LAKE – There are two active fires in Washington as of Oct. 2 but the rest of the fires from the season are contained or just being moderated according to Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Communications Manager Ryan Rodruck. Outside of that, Rodruck said fire season is coming to a conclusion; however, people should still be mindful because new blazes are still starting.
