Marion Martin Moore
It has been one year since my grandfather Martin passed away May 26, 2023, at the age of 91; he is dearly missed and honored every day. Martin passed away peacefully with his beloved cat Fancy by his side.
Born Marion Martin Moore on Oct. 11, 1931, in Moscow, Idaho to Marion Chandler Moore and Ann Knudson Moore. Martin grew up on a farm in the Moscow/Lewiston area. He always told me he was "the first one out in the morning and the last one in at night" on the farm, working hard to care for the animals and help with the crops. He talked about how much he loved his mother's cooking and tending to his horse.
Martin graduated with a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Idaho and married Calista Arlene Brackett of Reubens, Idaho in the 1950s. He worked for the railroad and also for a plant nursery. He created a new strain of a carnation flower while he was a student at U of I.
Martin and Arlene had three sons, Marty, Kevin, and Jeff. Martin moved his family to Spokane, Washington for a short time and then moved to Moses Lake to farm in Mae Valley in the 1960s. He worked for U&I Sugar in the 1970s until they closed. He then started his business "Viking Industries' manufacturing potato defoamer.
Martin retired late in life but kept himself busy with many hobbies. He went back to school and earned a bachelor's degree in gemology.
Martin was highly intelligent and knew how to fix or do just about anything. His favorite pastimes and accomplishments were being a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, jewelry making, rock hounding, growing flowers, photography, darkroom printing, camping in Montana and Idaho, restoring antique engines and International Harvester steam tractors, computer programming, woodworking, making furniture, playing the violin and flying airplanes.
Martin and his son Kevin would have a "threshing bee" once in a while to show the community what it was like to harvest wheat the old-fashioned way with a steam tractor and thresher.
Martin enjoyed spending time with his great-granddaughter Katie and his cats, watching old westerns, eating ice cream and having coffee with his family and friends at Bob's Cafe.
Martin is preceded in death by his dear wife, Arlene, and his son, Kevin.
He is survived by his sons, Marty and Jeff; his siblings, John, Marilyn and Steve; his grandchildren Amy, Rebecca, Krista, Angela, Jereme, Kyle and Amanda, and several great-grandchildren.
My grandfather's smile and words of wisdom are missed every day.
