Acting super issues letter to MLSD families:
Moses Lake School District Acting Superintendent Carol Lewis released the letter below to families of students in the district Wednesday afternoon. The letter is printed in full without any editing from Columbia Basin Herald Staff:
Dear Families,
Moses Lake School District remains committed to our mission of safety, respect, excellence, collaboration, and innovation, even during recent uncertainty that has surrounded our school district community. I am writing today to provide you with some important updates.
In short, the Moses Lake School District is facing significant budgetary constraints for the upcoming 2024-25 school year with an estimated $20 million budget reduction. This means we will need to make tough decisions regarding programs and staffing. While the specifics of the reduced educational program are yet to be finalized, decisions will be made collaboratively with the School Board of Directors and remain in compliance with legal requirements and high school graduation standards set forth by the Washington State Board of Education.
Furthermore, as of Tuesday, May 14th, Superintendent Sabin has been placed on administrative leave by the Board of Directors. We understand that this news may be unexpected and may raise concerns.
In the interim, I will be assuming the responsibilities of acting superintendent to ensure the continuity of our operations and support for our students, teachers, and staff. Please know that we are working diligently to ensure stability within our district and to address any immediate issues that may arise.
As we move forward, I want to assure you that our primary focus remains on providing exceptional education in a safe environment for every student. We will continue to provide updates as they are available. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our learning community.
Warm regards,
Carol Lewis
Acting Superintendent
