Evald Leaf

| May 13, 2024 1:54 PM

Evald Leaf, 101, passed away peacefully at his home in Moses Lake at sunrise May 3, 2024, just 90 days shy of his 102nd birthday. Just last month, he was talking about spring fishing and what to plant in his annual garden. This was just like him as he was always busy.

Truthfully, he really wasn't ready to leave as he talked of the future and looked forward to many more years ahead, but age finally caught up with him.

Around 1907, Evald’s parents, Charles (Karl August Lôf) Leaf and Hilda Gustafsson separately immigrated to the United States from Sweden. They met in the U.S., got married and owned a dairy farm in Issaquah, Wash. Evald, born in 1922, was the youngest of five children and attended school in Issaquah. After graduating from high school, he worked in the Seattle shipyards until he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II. While serving, he obtained the rank of Warrant Officer. While serving in Southampton, England, he met his first wife Norma Upstill, and they married after he returned from the war.

Evald arrived in Moses Lake in 1948 and operated a gas station and repair garage at the current location of Inland Body and Paint on Broadway. In 1962, Evald became the Volkswagen dealer for Moses Lake until he retired in the early 1990s.

In 1996 his wife, Norma, passed away. He then met and married Nona Sielaff in 2002. They traveled around North America and Europe, played cards and had lots of fun get-togethers at their home. Evald and Nona were always busy doing something interesting. Nona passed away in September of 2023.

Evald is survived by his sons, Ashley Leaf, Marvin (Carrie) Leaf and John (Jackie) Sielaff, grandchildren, Scott Leaf (Heather), Robert Leaf (Ivy) and Alex Leaf (Briana), and great-grandchildren Juliana Leaf, William Leaf and Lux Leaf. In addition, Evald enjoyed the extended family through Nona including John and Jackie, five grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great great-great-grandchildren.

Evald is preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Leaf, and son Anthony Leaf, as well as his second wife, Nona Sielaff-Leaf. He's also preceded in death by his brothers, John (Oscar), Art, Walt and George, and his sister, Vera. He spoke of his siblings often and dearly missed them all.

A service will not be held at this time. Please sign his online guestbook at www.kayserschapel.com.

Evald Leaf served in the U.S. Army during World War II and became a warrant officer during his time in the military.
