William Hewitt

William Howard Hewitt, 90, was a devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, friend and self-appointed executive chairman of the Bookery coffee group. He was born in 1934 in Fairbury, Neb., to Howard and Anna Hewitt. 

He will be remembered for his love for his family; his trust of God and faith in Jesus; his love of people; his work with the Bureau of Reclamation; his service in the community and his devotion to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, his alma mater. Despite the loss of a leg at the age of 8, as a result of a farming accident, this did not slow him down, define him or inhibit his active lifestyle. Before he was limited by a wheelchair, he loved playing golf, bowling, bike riding and fishing. He watched his favorite college teams, but especially enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play their sports.

Bill's first job was in Riverton, Wyo., with the Bureau of Reclamation in the soils lab. In 1960, Bill was transferred to the largest soil lab for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in Ephrata, Wash. He worked for the Bureau for 33 years. During these years, he served within the First Baptist Church community and on the Ephrata District School Board. Following retirement, he served the community as a Grant County Public Utility District Commissioner. 

Most of all, Bill loved his family. He married Barbara in 1964. They raised Micheal and Greg. Micheal married Kevin Teague, and they are the parents of Meredith, Celia and Ava. Greg married Denise Kennedy, parents of Emma and Max. He was Uncle Bill to his beloved nieces and nephews. 

A graveside service will be held at Valley View Memorial Cemetery in Soap Lake for the family Friday, Aug. 2. The memorial service will be held at GracePoint Church in Ephrata on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m.
