OTHELLO — The Huskies came out on top of their home tournament over the weekend, winning the Leonard Schutte Round Up with a team score of 280 points.

Among the local finishes was Quincy in fifth (123.5 points), Royal in seventh (92.5 points) and Moses Lake in eighth (70.5 points).

“We did try to challenge them to venture out a little bit and try some new stuff, but for the most part, they stayed locked in on the things that are working for them,” Othello head coach Rudy Ochoa II said. “We wanted to try and wrestle as sound as we could and stay out of a bad position. This weekend, we succeeded with that.”

Eight Huskies finished on top of their respective weight classes; freshman Xavier Mendez (106), junior Daniel Gonzalez (120), junior Mason Russell (132), sophomore Nathaniel Flores (138) sophomore Armoni Zuniga-Mendez (150), junior Camilo Mendez III (157), senior Anthony Solorio (215) and senior Mason Perez (285) all finished on top of the podium.

Quincy senior Saidt Alvarez (113) and Royal sophomore Cael Orth (165) also won their respective weight classes.

“It’s always fun to see their smile after they win, especially in that big match in the finals,” Ochoa said. “I think it’s really good, hopefully it’s a confidence booster. They’ve been working really hard, so it’s always good to see when they have some of those rewards.”

Altogether, Othello had 16 wrestlers reach the podium at the tournament. Ochoa said wrestling on their home mats gave the team a boost in results.

“Being in front of a crowd, when their teammates are having a good tournament, it’s contagious,” Ochoa said. “It motivates them maybe a little bit extra.”
