Sergio Cervantes
Sergio Jose Cervantes, a longtime resident of Moses Lake, Wash., passed away Monday, Aug. 26, due to complications from heart disease. He was 67 years old.
Sergio was born in Prosser, Wash., on May 17, 1957, to Benito Sr. and Irene Cervantes. He developed an unparalleled work ethic early on in his life. Later, Sergio was a fixture on the Big Bend Community College campus, where he worked in the maintenance department. Throughout his nearly 20 years of employment there, he befriended professors, coaches, staff and students alike with his friendly demeanor and great sense of humor.
His willingness to help others extended far beyond his profession. He frequently ministered to and uplifted others. He was especially committed to family and friends, many of whom considered him a father figure. All who knew him well can personally attest to his willingness to stop and help a complete stranger in need on the side of the road. His unfailing generosity toward others distinguished him as a true neighbor to all.
Sergio loved fixing cars, riding his motorcycle, taking a sauna and spending time with his loved ones. His love of pickles was legendary, earning him the affectionate nickname "Pickles" among friends and family.
Sergio is survived by his five children: Santino (Polly), Bianca, Leilani (Luciano Martinez Jr.), Kevin and Sasha (Matt Boyd). He is also survived by his four sisters: Sylvia Cervantes, Grace Smith (Gene), Norma Sharp (Andrew) and Lucila Campbell (Shawn); his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved eight grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benito Sr. and Irene Cervantes, and brothers Benito Jr. and Ralph Cervantes, as well as his brothers-in-law, Shawn Campbell and Pete Hinojosa.
Sergio lived his life boldly, without reservation, guided by strong moral clarity and conviction. His legacy of diligence in duty will be echoed for generations to come.
