New high in entries at Moses Lake Roundup

MOSES LAKE — Nearly 600 entries were made into the 81st Moses Lake Roundup, marking a new high in both contestants throughout the weekend of competition.

“We put on a fantastic show all three nights of the rodeo,” Moses Lake Roundup Board Treasurer Tyler Brown said. “We had a full slate of contestants, a huge crowd of spectators that were all really involved with it.” 

Brown said there were about 100 more contestant entries than 2023’s Roundup, while attendance in the stands rose by 600 spectators on both Thursday and Friday compared to last year. The quality of rodeo contestants continues to improve, with this year’s performances featuring plenty of National Finals Rodeo qualifiers.  

“We put on a really great rodeo — we have great payouts, we have an incredible stock contractor that brings in some of the best livestock in the area, so that draws a lot of the big-name cowboys,” Brown said. “I’d say as far as a percentage of NFR-qualifying contestants this year, we probably had 30%.” 

This year’s edition of the Moses Lake Roundup had $217,882 in added money, more than $30,000 more than last year’s rodeo. 

“It comes from our ticket sales, our sponsorships with all our great sponsors — that's how we raise that money,” Brown said. “Every year we look and see how we’re going to do out payout, and we’ve been increasing it year over year for a number of years.” 

Friday’s shooting and evacuation at the neighboring carnival did not affect the performances at the Moses Lake Roundup, Brown said. The show carried on Friday night following the shooting. 

“We continued on with the rodeo because the (shooting) was going on in the fairgrounds, and it didn’t affect us,” Brown said. “... We had a few people that wanted to leave the area, and we were manning the gates and let them out as they wanted to go. We weren’t letting anyone into the arena — we just kept the show going.” 

Event winners at the rodeo were Wacey Schalla in bareback riding (89 points), Trisyn Kalawaia in steer wrestling (3.9 seconds), Dustin Egusquiza and Levi Lord in team roping (4.1 seconds), Damian Brennan in saddle bronc (90.5 points), Cole Clemens in tie-down roping (7.5 seconds), LaTricia Duke in barrel racing (16.99 seconds) and Jordan Spears in bull riding (89 points). Schalla was the all-around cowboy, competing in both bareback and bull riding and earning $5,922.
