Creative District to host traditional Cuban music concert
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Creative District will host its final free summer concert Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. in McCosh Park’s Centennial Amphitheater with traditional Cuban son music performed live by the SuperSones, according to a press release from the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center.
According to the release, the Seattle-based SuperSones play music known as son — the acoustic dance music of the Cuban countryside that inspired modern salsa music. Son is a unique blend of Spanish guitars and harmony, Afro-Cuban percussion and swing, call-and-response singing and trumpet improvisation, said the release.
“From the 1930s in Havana to the present moment, Cuban septets like SuperSones have inspired people around the world to dance and celebrate,” stated the press release.
The SuperSones perform a wide range of classic and original songs in the many genres within the son family, including bolero, chachacha, guaracha and son montuno, among others, according to the announcement.
The group plays songs written by composers of Cuban popular music including Company Segundo, Miguel Matamoros, Isaac Oviedo and Arsenio Rodriguez. According to the release, the SuperSones recreate these songs with their own arrangements and improvisations.
The Moses Lake Creative District committee includes representatives from Columbia Basin Allied Arts, the Downtown Moses Lake Association, the Moses Lake Public Library, the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, and other organizations. The release said the Creative District team is planning a full roster of concerts for the summer of 2024.
