Patricia Joan (Jess) Goodwin

| October 27, 2023 11:13 AM

Patti was born March 6, 1938, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Wash. She was the firstborn to Melvie and Myrtle (Dugger) Jess. A year and one month later, she was joined by her brother, Donald, in April of 1939. Five years later, in late 1943, her cousins John and Bobbee Jo Jess, joined the family, after their mother passed away and they were adopted by Melvie and Myrt. Patti loved the growing-up years in the 1940s and ’50s. She always lived in the house one mile south of Hartline that she was brought home to. Later, she moved next door into her parents’ newer home following her mother’s death and her father’s move to the summer home. The exception was four and one-half years living in Naval housing at Tongue Point Oregon (Astoria), the Jesses’ summer home at Hansville, Washington and the Goodwins’ Hoaglen Valley Ranch in Trinity County, Calif., and finally living about 18 months on the Kerr Ranch east of Arcata, Blue Lake and Korbel, Calif., where husband Dave logged with his brother.

Just one day after graduating from Hartline High School in 1956, she married her Navy, rancher, cowboy, logger love, David L. Goodwin on May 26, 1956, in Hartline in the Methodist Church where she was baptized. Daughter Jeannie was their firstborn, entering the world at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Wash., in 1957. Sons Clint (1958) and Jess (1961) were born in Eureka, Calif. In the fall of 1961, they moved back to Hartline to help her parents with farming.

Patti was involved in many community and philanthropic organizations. She was a member of Prairie Chapter No. 139 and Order of Eastern Star, since being initiated in March of 1956. She served two years as worthy matron and one year as a district deputy. She was a past member of Daughters of The Nile and Ladies Oriental Shrine in Spokane; a 10-year director on the Grant County Fair Board; 24-year member of Grant County Historical Society (serving many years as secretary and president); member of the Eagles Lodge of Moses Lake; former member of Blind Springs and later Highland granges; Hartline School PTA past president; 4-H leader for 14 years; firearm safety instructor for 10 years and current member of both the American Legion Auxiliary Art Semro Unit 28 of Ephrata. She was also a member of the Grant County CattleWomen, serving as president for two years. She was state secretary in 1994 and was then elected to serve as president of Washington CattleWomen in 1996. She was honored as CattleWoman of the Year in Grant County two different years and later was honored as Washington CattleWoman of the Year in 2005.

Patti especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. She also enjoyed trap shooting and was at one time the Grant County ladies' champion! She was an avid genealogist and family historian and enjoyed crocheting, scrapbooking and cooking, which led her to start a cake-baking and catering career that lasted 25 years. Many will remember her beautiful cakes for birthdays and weddings. Patti was also instrumental in researching the history of Hartline. Her bout with cancer in 1986 stopped many of her activities. She especially loved nature and all the surrounding beauty, even the sagebrush! Her church was out-of-doors, where she spent many hours talking to her Lord and listening to country music and songbirds.

She leaves behind a loving family and many special friends. Family includes daughter Jeannie (Chuck) Kiehn of George, Wash.; sons Clint Goodwin (Kamiah) of Northport and Hartline, Wash., and Jess Goodwin of Coulee City, Wash.; grandchildren Jessica Goodwin, Marie (Wesley) Taylor, Dawnna Goodwin, Brenda (Ken) Murray, Kacey (Kiely) Kiehn, Cade (Jessica) Kiehn, Allie Kiehn, Josh (Bri) Goodwin and Josi (Bo) Tully; and great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Sarah and David Scherer; Colton (Ali), Landon, Cheznee and Paige Murray; Alyssa Goodwin; Jacey Taylor; Amelia and Josephine Kiehn; Granger Kiehn and Goldie Tully. Two more great-grandsons are on the way as well. She is also survived by her brother Don Jess of Hansville, Wash., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Patti in death was her beloved husband Dave in 2021; grandson Yancy Goodwin; both her and Dave’s parents; brother John; sister Bobbee Jo; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins and dear friends.

Her family extends a special thank-you to amazing friends who helped and visited her regularly, the Hartline EMTs, and her doctors and nurses. Patti’s wish was that any memorials in her name be made to The Hartline Betterment Organization, which cares for the Historic Hartline School and Hartline Liberty Museum; Hartline Fire Fighters Association or the Hartline Cemetery.

Patti’s funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 2023, at the Hartline School gym, followed by a graveside service at the Hartline Cemetery. A reception will follow.
