The Bureau of Reclamation’s Ephrata Field Office monitors and manages a variety of water storage and conveyance infrastructure for the use and benefit of water districts and other stakeholders who depend on these supplies for irrigation, municipal use, health of fisheries, and other related purposes. To better meet current and future water use needs, the EFO is undertaking a hydrogeologic characterization study throughout the area. In accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration regulations, Reclamation is providing public notice about an upcoming research project involving low-level helicopters flights in the area of north of Moses Lake in Washington. The helicopter will tow a large hexagonal frame through the project area from Oct. 15, 2023, to Oct. 25, 2023, to capture geologic and groundwater imagery. Reclamation contracted SkyTEM to collect real-time airborne electromagnetic geophysical survey imagery to help determine the subsurface hydrogeologic structure in the area. The instrumentation mounted below the helicopter gathers geophysical measurements to learn more about geology and the extent of aquifers existing below the sub-surface. The contract helicopter will fly along survey lines and grid runs over the survey area which extends from Rocky Ford Creek to the west, Crab Creek to the east, Highway 17 to the south, and Highway 28 to the north. Data gathered from the research flights will help the EFO better understand and manage water resources, provide detailed geological cross sections, and 3D imagery. Data acquisition is expected to take place throughout October. For more information, please contact Jennifer McConnell, project manager at 509-771-5098. #10039/15119 Pub: October 12, 19, 2023
