Q&A: Othello City Council candidates
OTHELLO — Darryl Barnes is running against Eugene Bain for Othello City Council Position 4.
The Columbia Basin Herald asked each candidate the questions below with matching word count restrictions and a deadline to submit responses. Only Bain responded by the given deadline and his responses are provided below. The newspaper encourages voters to contact the candidates if they want to discuss issues in more depth.
By what specific means would you help foster economic and commercial growth in Othello?
Bain: I have been in the Automotive Commercial Business Management world for 30-plus years and with all the experience of learning how to manage an grow a business, I was able to advise and council my own wife when she bought a small salon in town. I was able to help her make important decisions in how to keep and grow her business for the last 14-plus years, even through the tough times in 2020. I believe that my experience would be helpful in making decisions with the City Council as well.
What is your opinion of or solution for the excessive number of stray animals and the Adams County Pet Rescue’s poor financial situation?
Bain: My opinion is the numbers of the stray animals have been reduced from years past, which we want to thank Adams County Pet Rescue for their efforts in reducing those numbers. Now, regarding the Adams County Pet Rescue I had the opportunity to be in that evening’s council meeting. It is a very difficult situation for them right now. Due to loss of some donor funding and the economy business are needing to make adjustments that would help them run more efficiently. It will be interesting to see what the City Council decides.
In your opinion, what are Othello’s strengths and how do you plan on capitalizing on them?
Bain: Our beautiful parks are one of our strengths and I would like to see more sporting events held. They bring so much revenue to our local business, our hotels, restaurants and stores. Another thing I would like to see is a covered farmers market/food court that would give people the opportunity to start or build their businesses as well as help bring the community together.
How can the public contact you?
Bain: The public can contact me by sending me an email to ewbain2023@outlook.com.
