A good run

MOSES LAKE — Athletes from the Moses Lake boys and girls track and field teams celebrated the team’s seniors on Thursday’s home track meet, the lone home meet of the season for the Mavs.

Both the boys and girls split the meet; the Moses Lake boys defeated Wenatchee 86-64 and fell to Eisenhower 79-66, while the Moses Lake girls thumped Eisenhower 95-55 and lost 86-64 to Wenatchee.

“When they were freshmen they had the first two weeks being out for track, then COVID hit,” Moses Lake Head Coach Nicki Weiland said. “Before they could even have their first meet, they were done for that season. That didn’t discourage them; (of that freshman class) we had 10 of the 26 seniors with us at the senior recognition on Thursday. They’re the backbone of this team.”

Thirty-four new personal bests were set at Thursday’s meet, six of which were by seniors.

“That’s really cool that they did that,” Weiland said. “It was a good showing, it was a good day.”

Weiland credited the leaders on both the boys and girls teams for guiding the athletes along through the season. The Maverick girls finished the league season in second place behind Wenatchee, which was decided at Thursday’s meet.

“They have good leadership from the girls with Sydney Macdonald and Kailee Kellum as distance girls, and Kathryn Pugh for jumpers,” Weiland said. “For the boys, it was led by (Jacob) Goude for the jumpers and Logan and Ethan LaBonte, the twin boys.”

Moses Lake heads to the Columbia Basin Big-Nine Inter-City Championships on Friday, then moves into the postseason with district meets on Thursday, May 18, and Saturday, May 20.

With both days of the 2023 districts being held at Eisenhower, Weiland said the number of runners who will advance past districts will be decided at the seeding meeting on May 15. Either 20 or 24 athletes will advance past districts. In the past, the two-day district meet was split between Big-Nine schools and Wenatchee and Yakima.

Moses Lake has competed three times already at Eisenhower this season.

“This will be our fourth time, so I told our kids ‘It’s like our home track, in a way,’” Weiland joked. “We’re used to that track, with the curves, the javelin throws and how it feels down that runway.”

Moses Lake currently has 53 spots claimed on the Big-Nine’s top 10 list according to Athletic.net, 26 by boys and 27 by girls.

Athletes in the top three of the CBBN standings include junior Ty Rimple (first in 400-meter, second in 200-meter and third in 100-meter), sophomore Hunter Blackman (first in javelin, second in discus and third in shot put), Macdonald (first in 100-meter hurdles, tied for first in high jump, second in triple jump), senior Kathryn Pugh (tied for first in high jump), Kellum (tied for first in high jump, first in long jump), the boys 4x400-meter relay team (second), the girls 4x100-meter (third) and 4x400-meter (third) relay teams, sophomore Kaiya Char (third in 100-meter, third in 300-meter hurdles), sophomore Madison Bond (third in 300-meter hurdles, third in triple jump) and senior Jayden Nordstrom (tied for third in pole vault).
