PITCH RECAP: Basin boys soccer teams prep for postseason
COLUMBIA BASIN – Local boys soccer teams are preparing for postseason runs, as tournaments began on Monday with Ephrata playing Grandview in the Central Washington Athletic Conference. See below for upcoming tournament matchups and how teams stack up with the end of the regular season on the horizon.
4A
Moses Lake
The Mavs started off last week with a 6-5 road win over West Valley (Yakima) on Tuesday, giving Moses Lake the regular season sweep over the Rams. On Friday, the Mavs fell 6-0 to Columbia Basin Big-Nine leading Davis, falling to 5-9 overall. Moses Lake closed its regular season on the road against Wenatchee on Tuesday night, though scores were not available in time for press deadline. The top six seeds qualify for next week’s CBBN tournament, and Moses Lake currently sits at the No. 6 seed as of Tuesday afternoon.
2A
Ephrata
After sweeping Grandview in the regular season (3-2 win on March 31 and 4-2 win on April 22), the Tigers fell to the No. 3 seed Greyhounds 4-0 on the road in the first round of the CWAC tournament on Monday night, moving Ephrata into the consolation bracket. Their opponent has yet to be determined as of Tuesday afternoon, though the 5-12-1 Tigers will face the loser of Wednesday’s matchup between No. 1 East Valley (Yakima) and No. 5 Selah in a loser-out game on Saturday.
Othello
The Huskies finished the regular season in second place of the CWAC, giving them a bye in the 2023 CWAC tournament. After Grandview’s win over Ephrata on Monday, Othello (11-4-1) will host the Greyhounds in the district semifinals on Wednesday. Othello finished the regular season on a four-game win streak and has won nine of its previous 10 games.
1A
Quincy
The 13-1 Jackrabbits clinched the 2023 Caribou Trail League title last week in a 1-0 win over Cascade (Leavenworth), automatically qualifying for a spot in the semifinals of next week’s District 6 1A Boys Soccer tournament in Wenatchee. Quincy concludes the regular season against Omak on Wednesday.
Royal
The Knights enter the postseason with an 11-4 record and a second-place finish in the South Central Athletic Conference (East) and will host Toppenish in the first round of the SCAC tournament on Thursday. Royal won three of its final four games to finish the regular season and finished 10-2 in SCAC games.
Wahluke
The 2023 SCAC (East) regular season champions won their final five games of the regular season, including a 1-0 win over Royal to clinch the league title. With a No. 1 seed in the SCAC tournament, Wahluke hosts No. 4 seed La Salle on Thursday in the first round of the tournament. The Lightning finished the regular season with an 8-8 record.
Warden
The Cougars finished one game shy of qualifying for the SCAC tournament, finishing their season with a 5-9-1 overall record. Warden defeated Omak 1-0 in its final game of the season.
