OLYMPIA - Sen. Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island) announced her resignation Tuesday from the Washington State Senate. She is stepping down to serve on the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, according to a press release from her office.

After her resignation from the Senate, effective on Aug. 15, Rolfes will take over the Board of Commissioner’s vacant District 1 seat, the announcement said. She has served in the Washington Senate since 2011, after a five-year term in the House of Representatives.

“It has been a true honor to serve the people of the 23rd Legislative District and our entire state in the Legislature,” Rolfes said. “I really want to thank my community for trusting me to do this work.”

Rolfes’ current four-year Senate term will be filled by a temporary appointee through the 2024 election, according to the release. The appointee will be chosen by the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners from a list of three names submitted by the district’s precinct committee officers.
