MOSES LAKE – Jayson Byers, a six-foot-seven post for the Mavericks, signed to play college basketball at Spokane Community College on Wednesday to continue his athletic career.

“I’m so excited, it’s a huge opportunity for me,” Byers said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

The coaching staff and how “eager” they were to sign Byers is what stood out about the program, he said.

“To me, it said how much they see in me and what type of player I can become,” Byers said.

Moving out of Moses Lake and getting an all-new basketball experience is what Byers looks forward to the most in his new career with the Bigfoot.

“I’m really looking forward to the experience,” Byers said. “I’m getting the whole thing – moving out of town, going to meet all new people. Whole new program, new fans, new people to work with.”

Byers is the most recent member of his family to go on to play college basketball, as his mom and dad played at Wenatchee Valley and Big Bend, respectively. His brother also played college basketball at Spokane. That family history in basketball is what inspired the newest member of the Bigfoot to begin playing basketball when he was in the first grade.

“They’ve been through it, so they’re helping me a lot more kids in my situation are,” Byers said. “They know the ins and outs of everything.”
