WIAA moves State Football Championships to Husky Stadium
RENTON — The state football championship games for all Washington Interscholastic Activities Association classifications will be hosted at Husky Stadium in 2023, the WIAA announced in a release on Tuesday.
The six games will be played over a two-day span in Husky Stadium in Seattle, with 1B, 1A and 3A classifications playing on Friday and 2B, 2A and 4A classifications playing Saturday. Game times have yet to be announced.
“We are thankful to the University of Washington Athletics leadership team for their continued support and allowing students to make lifelong memories at a world-class facility,” WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman said in the release. “We are hopeful that this format will provide a positive experience for the schools involved and will be embraced by the Washington football community.”
According to the release, the venue and format was approved by the WIAA Executive Board on a one-year trial basis, with plans to rebid and find a consistent home for the championship games in the 2024-2028 classification cycle.
After being held at the Tacoma Dome until the 2018 season, the State Football Championships were moved to three high school stadiums in Pierce County; Mount Tahoma High School, Sparks Stadium and Harry Lang Stadium.
