MOSES LAKE – The Columbia Basin Barrel Racing Club kicked off its classic race schedule with the Spring Classic on Saturday at the Grant County Fairgrounds, where riders competed in two races on Saturday morning.

The Spring Classic is the first of four classic races the CBBRC will host this year, with the Summer Classic held in late July, Fall Classic held in early September and NFR Race held in mid-October.

“Right now there’s three races throughout our area, and graduation and all these things (are) going on,” CBBRC President Laurie Coombs said. “Usually, throughout the rest of the year … those usually get pretty good turnouts, usually over 100.”

For its classic races, the CBBRC typically gets riders from not just around the Columbia Basin, but the entire Pacific Northwest.

“We have had them from Montana, Oregon, Idaho,” Coombs said. “It just depends on the time of year and what rodeos are going on.”

Along with its classic races, the CBBRC also hosts races on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from April to August where riders compete for points for end-of-the-year awards. Even though the Tuesday night races have already started Coombs said those interested in signing up can still do so by visiting the CBBRC’s website at https://bit.ly/3qvJr4O.

“Two Tuesdays a month we have our club races that we do for points,” Coombs said. “There’s 10 races that they have to have a chance to run at to earn points for year-end (awards).”

The next event on the CBBRC’s schedule is its School’s Out for Summer Playday, hosted at the Rodeo Arena at the Grant County Fairgrounds with a myriad of events; horse events including barrels, poles, Idaho figure 8, speed barrels, cal stake and key race; non-horse events like a balloon race, egg race, water race, three-legged race and a stick horse race. Entry for spectators to all CBBRC events is free.

Competing in all the horse events at the playday costs $40 for all events or $10 for a single event. For non-horse events, it’s $20 for the full slate of events or $5 per event.

The playday will also have an Open Barrel 5D Jackpot, with a buckle going to the fastest time in the open. Cost of entry is $45.

“If you don’t ride or don’t have a horse, we have events where people can come enter,” Coombs said. “We have a stick horse race, a three-legged race – just a fun play day out in the (Rodeo Arena).”
