WSU rowers excel at 2023 World Rowing U-23 Championships
PLOVDIV, Bulgaria — Washington State women's rowers Ella Greenslade, Fiona Elliott, and Ilaria Macchi each had a strong performance for their respective home countries at the 2023 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.
Greenslade and Elliott are coming back from Plovdiv, Bulgaria with a medal, as Greenslade helped New Zealand win silver in the U-23 Women's Coxed Four Final and Elliott guided Canada to a bronze finish in the U-23 Women's Eight Final. Macchi, who rowed for Italy in the U-23 women's four boat, led her home country to a first-place finish in the U-23 Women's Four B Final.
New Zealand won the silver medal in the U-23 Women's Coxed Four Finals this past Saturday, July 22. Greenslade sat in the coxswain position for her home country, helping New Zealand clock in at 6:50.86, just 1.3 seconds behind Australia. New Zealand defeated the United States, Italy and Germany in the U-23 Women's Coxed Four Finals.
Elliott sat in the four-seat for Canada in Sunday's U-23 Women's Eight Final. The Canadians won the bronze medal in the six-team race, as Elliott helped her home country complete the 2,000-meter course in 6:16.99. The United States won the U-23 Women's Eight final with a time of 6:09.14.
Macchi was in the stroke position for Italy in its U-23 women's four boat. She helped the Italians win the U-23 Women's Four B Final on Saturday, as Italy posted a time of 6:37.25 to finish seventh overall in the U-23 women's four at the World Rowing U-23 Championships.
