Couleegan’s Bar & Grill

COULEE CITY – At the West end of Main Street in Coulee City is Couleegan’s Bar and Grill; a place where everyone is welcome and everyone leaves with a smile.

“My goal when I come to work every single day is to make sure that I make every single person that walks through the door smile on their way back out,” said Couleegan’s Manager Alexandria Davis.

A wood sign that hangs above the door states, “Through these portals walk the best people on earth; our friends,” which is something Davis said is important. The bar’s owners and employees treat every customer as a friend and want the place to be somewhere everyone feels welcome. A lot of their customers live in the Coulee City community.

“We’re based on our locals,” Davis said. “If I didn’t have my locals I wouldn’t be in business.”

Couleegan’s has several unique features. There are two pool tables at the north end of the business, a small stage area at the front and a large wooden backbar and front bar that is more than 100 years old.

Davis said the backbar and bar are both German woodwork made in the 1800s, and they both traveled to San Francisco and got a couple of bullet holes as wounds from gold rush days. Davis said the bar and backbar both landed in Pendleton before arriving in Coulee City in the 1950s in the building that is now Couleegans.

The building itself also holds a lot of history. Davis said the building was built in the early 1900s and was a men’s hattery and clothing shop before being turned into a bar in the 1920s.

Couleegan’s serves both bottled and canned alcoholic beverages as well as beer from the tap, which flows with Mac & Jack’s, Bale Breaker Topcutter IPA, Bodhizafa IPA and Manny’s Pale Ale, among others. The owners also have a rotating IPA and plan to have a cider this summer.

Their food options are diverse, from appetizers such as gizzards, onion rings and jalapeno poppers, to more filling options such as pizza, roasted chicken (weekends only until summertime), sandwiches, salads, in-house pressed burgers and fish and chips.

“We have a pretty wide variety, the only thing is that I would say we’re not very gluten-free friendly, unfortunately,” Davis said.

Regardless, Davis said they will try to accommodate any allergies or intolerances to the best of their ability and hopes to expand on that in the near future.

“I try to accommodate anyone that I possibly can,” said Davis.

The business is owned by Teri and Tom Hattamer who said they left the west side of the state, where they ran a catering business for 45 years. They bought Couleegan’s just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Everything was real successful (from day one) and we did real good through COVID-19,” Tom said.

Couleegan’s hosts events weekly; Bingo is held every Tuesday at 4 p.m., karaoke every Friday at 7 p.m. and pool tournaments every Saturday at 2 p.m. Both bingo and karaoke are free, while the pool tournament has a $5 buy-in per person for a chance to split the cash pot and win prizes. They have a band scheduled to perform Memorial Day weekend and hope to bring more live music to the business this summer.

“It’s a home away from home,” Davis said. “It’s a place to come and feel comfortable, you don’t have to worry about whether someone’s not going to like you, I mean, we’re in Coulee City, we’re a small agricultural town and everyone’s fairly friendly.”

Couleegan’s is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. They are located at 508 West Main Street in Coulee City.
