GCSO urges caution while celebrating at bars
EPHRATA — The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has issued a statement warning area residents to be cautious when out at bars regarding Rohypnol, also known as roofies, and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, also known as GHB or liquid ecstasy. Both are date rape drugs and can take away the ability to fight back or remember what happened while under their effects. Mixing these substances with alcohol can also be fatal.
To reduce the risk of exposure to these substances, GCSO recommends keeping a close eye on your beverages and replacing them if they’re out of your site. Don’t accept open drinks from anyone but the bartender and watch the bartender mix your beverage once you order it. Avoid drinking from punch bowls which are easy to spike with substances. Use the buddy system to avoid risky situations and stick with your friends.
Anyone who suspects they were exposed to date rape drugs are encouraged to go to the emergency room and request a urine screening test. Traces of the drug may appear up to 72 hours after ingestion, but proof should be obtained as soon as possible. Victims of any sexual assault are encouraged to call New Hope at 888-560-6027.
