HYAK — A section of Interstate 90 will be closed Tuesday and Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting about an hour, to allow crews to do some rock blasting along the roadsides, according to a press release from the Washington Department of Transportation. Eastbound travelers will be stopped at milepost 63 and westbound travelers at exit 70 near Easton.

“Rock blasting is scheduled for one to two times per week throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall, one hour before sunset,” the press release said. “Closures will last up to one hour.”

The rock blasting is part of a longer-term construction project to widen I-90 from four to six lanes from the Cabin Creek interchange to the West Easton interchange.

The project started in summer 2022 and will continue through fall 2028, according to information on the WSDOT website. Along with adding a third lane in each direction, the plan includes replacing the concrete pavement, stabilizing rock slopes, improving traffic management systems and building crossings for wildlife.
