OLYMPIA — The state of Washington will offer scholarships for qualifying applicants considering nursing careers.

The nursing scholarships will provide on-the-job training through apprenticeships for licensed practical nurses working in long-term care facilities that serve veterans. Those include veterans homes in Walla Walla and Spokane, as well as the Washington Veterans Home and the Washington Soldiers Home.

The nursing training project is a partnership between Washington Labor and Industries and the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs, according to an L&I press release.

“The program will focus on nursing assistants and nursing technicians who are completing LPN coursework,” the press release said.

The program is funded through a federal grant, and another section of the grant will be used to help people who are in pre-apprentice programs, the press release said.

“This grant is part of a significant focus of L&I on increasing participation in registered apprenticeships,” it said.
