MOSES LAKE – The Columbia Basin Herald’s Newspapers In Education Golf Classic is returning on June 21, with proceeds going to the Herald’s NIE program.

As part of the NIE program, the Herald delivers copies of the paper daily to schools all around the Basin to be used in the classroom.

“The teachers use them for an educational tool,” said Bob Richardson, general manager of the Columbia Basin Herald and event chairman for the NIE Golf Classic. “... It teaches them to learn about things going on in our area, which is important to know, as well as how to decipher information and be able to write about it.”

This will be the 11th year the tournament has been held, coming off a five-year hiatus. In previous years, anywhere from 25-40 teams have signed up to help support the NIE Program according to Richardson.

“(The tournament) pays for the cost of the actual newspapers to go to the schools,” Richardson said. “We donate anywhere between 300-600 newspapers every day to schools in our delivery area. Othello, Moses Lake, Warden – all over the place.”

The four-person scramble-style tournament begins at 10 a.m. on June 21 at The Links at Moses Pointe. Cost of registration of $100 per player and includes a round of golf, lunch, beverage, unlimited warm-up on the practice range and a gift bag. Along with the actual tournament, other prizes for games and raffles are available at the event.

“We’ll have prizes that we’re going to raffle off, as well as prizes for longest drive (women’s and men’s), closest to the pin, longest putt,” Richardson said.”

Those interested in registering for or sponsoring the tournament can reach out to Richardson or Dana Moreno, the Herald’s Marketing and Audience Development Director by calling our offices at 509-765-4561. Sponsorships are available for the event itself, holes and carts.
