Area teams prep for state

COLUMBIA BASIN – The area’s final district tournaments begin this week, with local teams beginning their final pushes toward state competitions. Read along below for updates on teams here in the Basin, along with records and results for each team.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline

The Warriors bounced back with a win on the gridiron Friday, defeating Curlew 46-7 in a division crossover. ACH held the 5-3 Cougars to under 150 yards of total offense, forcing two turnovers in the process. Sophomore quarterback Carter Pitts led the team in rushing with 171 yards and three scores on 17 carries. Pitts also completed two of three pass attempts for 81 yards and a touchdown. The 6-3 Warriors will host Wilbur-Creston-Keller on Friday for a district crossover game.

ACH volleyball (7-5) defeated Wilbur-Creston-Keller and Wellpinit last week.

Ephrata

The Ephrata boy’s cross country team qualified for state competition on Saturday, coming in third place at the District 5/6 championships on Saturday. Junior Hayden Roberts finished second at the meet with a time of 15:34, with junior Hayden Malone joining him inside the top ten with an eighth-place finish in 16:06. The 2A state tournament is hosted at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Other Ephrata results:

Ephrata football (5-4) defeated Ellensburg 28-7.

Ephrata volleyball (11-3) defeated Grandview and Prosser in sweeps last week.

Lind-Ritzville

The Broncos won their sixth-straight game on the gridiron Saturday, defeating Asotin 48-0. It’s the second shutout of the season for the Bronco defense and the fourth time the team has scored 40 or more points. Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna/Harrington will look to keep up its momentum as they prepare for a road game against 9-0 Okanogan on Friday.

Bronco volleyball (11-3) lost to Colfax 3-0 on Tuesday.

Moses Lake

The Maverick slowpitch team headed to Yakima for the 4A state tournament this past weekend, falling to the eventual runner-up Central Valley 10-7 in the opening round. Moses Lake bounced back with a 14-6 win over Bothell Friday evening before being eliminated from the consolation bracket with a 17-11 loss to West Valley (Yakima) on Saturday. The Mavs finished the 2022 season with an 18-5 record.

Moses Lake volleyball (7-8) lost to Wenatchee 3-0 in the final game of the regular season.

Moses Lake girls’ soccer (5-11) lost 1-0 to Wenatchee in the final game of the regular season.

Moses Lake football (6-3) lost to Eastmont 37-35.

Other Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School results:

MLCA/CCS boys’ soccer (0-9) lost to both Prescott and Walla Walla Valley Academy last week.

Othello

See today’s story on the Huskies’ district match for an update on the Othello girls’ soccer team.

Other Othello results:

Othello volleyball (7-7) defeated East Valley (Yakima) and lost to Grandview last week. Both matches ended 3-1.

Othello football (7-1) defeated East Valley (Yakima) 35-10.

Quincy

The Jackrabbit girls’ soccer team went 2-1 last week including a district tournament win over Chelan, who swept Quincy in the regular season. Quincy (8-11) also defeated Omak and lost to Cashmere earlier last week. Now, the Jackrabbits prepare for a match with Cascade (Leavenworth) on Tuesday to decide who heads to the 1A District 6/7 crossover. The Kodiaks already defeated Quincy twice this season, outsourcing the Jackrabbits 11-0.

Other Quincy results:

Quincy volleyball (4-12) ended its season with a 3-1 win over Kittitas-Thorp on Thursday.

Quincy football (3-6) lost 42-6 to Cashmere on Friday.

Royal

The Knights girls’ soccer team fell in the opening round of the District 5 tournament on Saturday, losing 2-1 on the road to Toppenish. On Tuesday, the Knights will host Naches Valley for a chance to advance on in the consolation bracket. Royal is 7-9 and defeated Naches Valley 2-0 in the first game of this season.

Earlier last week, Royal hosted La Salle in a 2-0 win on senior night.

Other Royal results:

Royal volleyball (8-8) lost 3-2 to La Salle, but made the district tournament for the first time in 13 years.

Royal football (7-1) earned a conference championship with a 36-0 win over Connell.

Soap Lake

Wahluke

The Warrior girls’ soccer team (12-4-1) began last week’s games by handing previously-undefeated Kiona-Benton City its first loss of the season in a 1-0 road win. Wahluke followed up with an 8-1 win over Zillah in the opening round of the 1A District 5 tournament on Saturday to set up a semi-final match with No. 1 seed out of the South Central Athletic Conference West in La Salle.

Other Wahluke results:

Wahluke volleyball (0-16) lost 3-0 to Kiona-Benton City.

Wahluke football (3-6) defeated Kiona-Benton City 30-27 in 2OT.

Warden

The Warden football team ended its five-game drought with a 35-0 win over Mabton on Saturday, moving the Cougars to 3-6 on the year. The game was the highest-scoring outing of the season for Warden, also shutting out an opponent for the first time this year. Up next for the Cougars is a road matchup against White Swan on Thursday.

Warden girls’ soccer (7-8) defeated Granger 1-0 last week.

Warden volleyball (10-6) lost 3-1 to River View.

Wilson Creek
