Mavs fall to Wenatchee in final game of regular season
Moses Lake — The Moses Lake girls soccer team took a tough 1-0 loss to Wenatchee High School Tuesday night. It was senior night for the Moses Lake Mavericks and their last game of the regular season.
“We’ve been working a lot in practice on little things that we’ve needed to correct this season and the puzzle pieces are starting to fall together,” said Head Coach Alysha Overland.
Despite the hard work and several close drives to the goal by Moses Lake, with 19:30 left in the first half, Wenatchee’s Natalie Zacarias made a goal. The Mavs had several key stops that gave them the opportunity to attempt a comeback but were not able to follow through. The Mavs fell with a loss of 1-0 to Wenatchee.
“I think that we stuck with Wenatchee the whole time so I don’t think it was Wenatchee being a better prepared team,” Overland said. “I think they just caught us with a long shot and it happened to go in and as hard as we tried to fight back, we couldn't get the counter on them.”
The last time the Mavericks took on Wenatchee they lost 4-0. Overland said she feels that the growth her team has had this season, paired with the emotions of it being senior night, fueled the Mavs to a more even matchup.
“I think the girl’s intensity and passion has just really grown throughout the season,” said Overland. “Especially since the first time we played them and plus it being senior night, there's just a lot of emotions going into the game and their fight to win.”
The team closes the regular season with a 5-11 overall record. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has the Mavs sitting at fifth out of seven in the Big Nine League.
Overland said the team will take on either Eastmont or Eisenhower in a playoff game Nov. 1 for a chance at state, both of which the Mavericks have already played twice.
Overland says she is excited for her team to play them a third time and show how they have grown over the season.
“I’m honestly excited to get the chance of a potential replay of every team in our league because the second half of the season has just been – I mean, our girls have been putting in work, we’ve been giving them a run for their money,” said Overland. “The girls are ready to show them the kind of soccer that they can play.”
