And then there were three

COLUMBIA BASIN — After a rough weekend of competition for high school sports teams in the Basin, only three softball teams are left to fight for the coveted state championship title. Those three teams are Warden, Royal and Othello.

Going into the weekend there were three soccer teams, six baseball teams and seven softball teams with games that would determine if they would move on in their respective district tournament, regional matchup or state competition.

Here’s how the teams did:

For soccer, Quincy High School and Wahluke High School each had games Friday night in the first round of the 1A Boys Soccer State Tournament. The first round saw only 16 of the best teams in the state.

Quincy took on Seattle Academy and lost 3-2. Wahluke also lost their game against Lakeside 1-0. Both teams are now out of the state tournament. Quincy ended with a 13-5-1 record and Wahluke 13-4-2.

Othello High School soccer lost in the second round of the 2A state tournament — top eight teams in the state — to Columbia River 3-0. Othello ends their season with a 14-4-1 record.

Moving on to baseball, Almira/Coulee-Hartline High School, Warden High School, Royal High School, Quincy, Ephrata High School and Moses Lake High School were playing in their respective regional tournaments Saturday.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline beat Mount Vernon Christian 5-2 Saturday morning. Later that day, they took on Nasalle, where they lost 15-10, ending their postseason run. They conclude with a 16-4-1 record.

Warden lost to Brewster 10-2 and finished with a 14-6 record.

Royal came out Saturday morning to beat La Center 7-6 but then lost to Bellevue Christian 8-3. They finished with an 11-7 record.

Quincy took on Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) and fell 10-0, ending with a 12-10 record.

Ephrata first went up against Fife on Saturday and walked away with a 1-0 victory. They took on Tumwater later that day and lost 2-1. Their season record is 19-5.

Moses Lake also took an early victory of 5-1 over Curtis but fell to Richland 2-0. Their postseason run ends with a 17-4 record.

In softball, there were seven teams with games this weekend. They were Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Warden, Wahluke, Royal, Othello, Moses Lake and Quincy.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline lost in the first round of the district tournament to Inchelium 23-21 on May 16. They moved on to the consolation bracket where they lost to Wilbur-Creston 5-1 on Friday. Their season ends with a 19-3 overall record.

Warden beat Granger on May 17 in the first round of districts, 17-0, they went on to also beat River View, 17-0, on Friday. Finally, on Friday evening, Warden saw victory over Kittitas, 16-1, to take the District 5 2B title and punch their ticket to state. Warden will play next at 2 p.m. at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima on May 27. Their opponent is yet to be announced. Their record is 20-1 for the season.

Wahluke bested Toppenish 14-1 in a pigtail to the district tournament on May 17. Wahluke then lost to College Place 16-0 on May 19, sending them to the consolation bracket. In the first game of the consolation bracket, Wahluke fell 11-1 to Wapato on Saturday. They finished with a 5-17 record.

Royal took on Naches Valley in the first round of districts, winning 17-0 on May 19. Next, they took on Zillah on Saturday, also seeing victory, 14-2. In the district championship on Saturday evening, Royal lost to College Place 4-2 but still punched its ticket to the state tournament. They hold a 14-4 record and next play May 27 against Castle Rock at 12 p.m. at Columbia Playfields in Richland.

Othello first beat Ephrata 13-3 in the district tournament before beating Selah 4-1 on May 17 to take the District 5/6 2A title. Othello moves on to state and next takes on West Valley (Spokane) at 12 p.m. on May 27 at Carlon Park in Selah. They are 21-1 overall.

Moses Lake took a tough loss 10-0 against Eastmont for the district title on Friday, they then also fell to West Valley in the consolation bracket on Saturday 9-7, ending their season. They finished 17-3-1 overall.

Quincy took on Cascade (Leavenworth) on Saturday in the district tournament, falling 12-2. They finished with a season record of 2-17.
