| May 17, 2022 1:00 AM

EPHRATA - The Ephrata American Legion will host the upcoming 2022 Evergreen Girls State conference and kick off this weekend.

“As a former Girls State participant and junior counselor, I’ve never forgotten my Girls State experience and I would highly recommend this program and the in-person kickoff on the 21st,” said Beth Burt, Evergreen Girls State Unit 28 project chair in the release.

Evergreen Girls State is a conference for high school girls that teaches the political structure, how to actively engage in it, and the importance of involvement at all levels, the release states.

The program helps girls see their involvement in government as important, essential and impactful. It allows a diverse group of young women to see themselves in the process; as they serve on the Girls State House and Senate, experience county politics and solve city problems.

This year the program will be a three-night virtual event featuring live presentations from prominent females in Washington State, including former Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman. Each speaker will present a topic and there will be a live Q&A after each speech. This virtual experience will include interactive activities to learn more about government and the American Legion Auxiliary.

All high school-age girls are encouraged to sign up and attend from May 31 to June 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration is at: www.evergreengirlsstate.com.

Participants are invited to attend a “Girls State Kickoff” on May 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Ephrata, 276 8th Ave NW.

Anyone planning to attend the kickoff at the Ephrata American Legion are asked to contact committee member Jane Montaney at (509)760-1433 so they can prepare enough supplies
