Othello wins both games of season-opening doubleheader
OTHELLO — The Othello High School girls softball team took both games of the team’s season-opening doubleheader Saturday in Othello, winning both games in five innings.
Othello defeated Chief Sealth of Seattle 11-0 in the first game and 17-1 in the second game. Coach Rudy Ochoa II said via email that he was pleased with his team’s performance.
“The girls looked very good in both wins for the first games of the year,” Ochoa wrote.
Maya Valdez was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out 10, giving up no hits and one base on balls. Nariah Benavidez was the catcher.
Valdez helped her cause by hitting a home run. Camryn McDonald had two hits in three at-bats, including a double. Emi Pruneda hit a triple.
The Huskies had seven hits in the game, scoring six runs in the second inning and five more in the fifth for the win.
Valdez also hit a home run in the second game, one of three by the Huskies. McDonald and Hailee Guzman also hit home runs. Guzman got three hits in three at-bats, and Valdez and McDonald went two-for-two. Makiah Galindo hit two doubles in the game, going two-for-three, and Persayis Garza hit a triple.
Galindo was the winning pitcher in the second game, pitching three innings, striking out four hitters, giving up two hits and committing two errors. Garza pitched one inning without giving up any hits and had one strikeout. Benavidez and Pruneda shared catching duties.
The Huskies had 13 hits in the second game.
