Infant formula recall expanded
OLYMPIA — Illinois-based Abbott Nutrition has expanded its recall of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare powdered infant formulas because of possible bacterial contamination.
According to a Wednesday press release from the Washington State Department of Health, Abbott has expanded the recall to include Similac PC 60/40 with lot codes 27032K80 on the can and 27032K800 on the case.
On Feb. 17, Abbott ordered a voluntary recall of both liquid and powdered infant formula produced in their Sturgis, Michigan, facility after reports of possible Cronobacter infection.
All products affected by the recall must have product codes that begin with the digits 22 through 37, contain K8, SH or Z2 and have a use-by date of April 1, 2022 — APR 2022 according to the DOH. Product lots can be found at the bottom of a package, and can be checked out at Abbott’s recall web site at www.similacrecall.com by clicking on the “check lot number” button or by calling the company’s toll-free hotline 1-800-986-8540.
The Department of Health said at least 18,000 families who receive infant formula through the Women, Infants and Children program may be involved in the recall, with a similar number not involved in the program estimated to have purchased recalled formula.
The health department said the first symptom of Cronobacter infection in infants is usually a fever accompanied by poor feeding, excessive crying, or very low energy. Some infants may have seizures, and the department advises parents or caregivers to contact their child’s health care provider if these symptoms are present or if recalled formula has been consumed.
