MLSD looking for help to pick new MLHS mascot
MOSES LAKE — With the Moses Lake School District now needing to find new mascots for its high school and two middle schools, and a new name for one middle school, the district is looking for committee volunteers to help.
In a press release sent out late Monday, MLSD announced it is accepting applications from those interested in sitting on the district’s mascot committee. Around 15 people will be selected to sit on the committee, MLSD said, which will meet four to six times before May 15.
The district is looking for people who can attend late afternoon and early evening meetings in order to fully participate in the process, the district said.
Input and comments from the community will not be considered until the committee is up and running.
MLSD is looking to rename the Moses Lake High School Chiefs, as well as the Frontier Middle School Warriors, the Chief Moses Middle School Braves, and CMMS itself, following a decision from the Business Council governing the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation denying approval for local high schools to use Native American names and mascots.
The Colville council made its decision following a 2021 state law that outlawed the use of Native American names, mascots and symbols across the state unless a local tribe approved.
Those interested in serving on the committee can download an application from the MLSD website www.mlsd161.org/MascotCommittee. Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 4, and applicants who are chosen to serve will be notified, according to the district.
