Three Basin essayists take first at state

EPHRATA — The American Legion Auxiliary, Art Semro Unit 28, announced on June 10 that three local students not only placed first in the Americanism Essay Contest at the local level but have gone on to be first place winners at the state level.

  • Ava Dart of St Rose of Lima School is first-place winner in Class I (3rd and 4th Grade).
  • Bryson Fleurkens, St Rose of Lima School is first-place winner in Class II (5th and 6th Grade).
  • Marianna Isaak, Almira/Coulee/Hartline School placed first in Class V (11th and 12th Grade).

The announcement said each student earned a framed certificate of achievement from the Department of Washington American Legion Auxiliary, a check in the amount of $50, and $50 will be donated in each of their names to the American Legion Auxiliary National Presidents’ Children of Warriors Scholarship.

Their essays have been sent on to be judged on the National Level and will be announced at the American Legion Auxiliary National Convention in August.
