MOSES LAKE — The Sand Scorpion Off Road Vehicle group was at it again tearing up the sand at the Moses Lake Sand Dunes with their annual Memorial Day Off Road Bash.

“The ORV area is an important asset to our community, drawing tens of thousands annually and providing family-friendly fun to all,” said Sand Scorpion board member Brandon Douglass.

The Off Road Bash was completely free to attend and participate in, said Douglass.

The event was split into two main events. The first event was the Run What Ya Brung Sand Drags. This allowed anyone who wanted to, to line up and take a run down the drag strip. Douglass said it was just for fun and bragging rights.

The second half of the event was the Big Air Competition where competitors would drive up a ramp and catch some air. There were four classes and the longest distance jumper from each class took home a custom-made trophy from CB Custom Creations. The four classes were MX(dirt bike), ATV, UTV/Sand Rail and Full Size.

This year’s winners for Big Air were Collin Jurin in the MX class, David Dahl for UTV, Alex Suarez for the ATV class and Roger Williamson in the Full Size class. Williamson also won the Full Size Big Air competition last year as well.

Douglass said they estimate 2500-3000 people attended the four-hour event. He said the attendance number was slightly down from the year before, and he thinks it’s possibly due to recoupling from COVID-19.

Sponsors of the event included the Washington Army National Guard, Grant County Tourism, Northwest Sign & Barricade, Dune Star Whips, CB Custom Creations and JWT Powersports.

Keep an eye out for other Sand Scorpion events. A few of the upcoming events include a kid’s race on July 23, Race Around the Bowls on August 20, Labor Day weekend Team Mud Bogs on Sept. 3 and the $5K Bounty Hole on Sept. 17.
